The Creation Story

God makes the world in six days, and rests on the seventh. A 2-minute animated story, told simply for children and families, with each verse from the King James Version.

1 of 9

Before anything else existed, there was God. The earth was empty and dark, and deep water covered everything.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Genesis 1:2 KJV

2 of 9

Then God spoke: “Let there be light.” Light shone in the darkness, and God saw that it was good. That was the first day.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Genesis 1:3 KJV

3 of 9

On the second day, God made the sky, stretching it out high above the waters.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Genesis 1:8 KJV

4 of 9

On the third day, God gathered the seas together so that dry land appeared. Grass, flowers and fruit trees sprang up everywhere.

And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:12 KJV

5 of 9

On the fourth day, God made the sun to light the day, and the moon and the stars to light the night.

And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

Genesis 1:16 KJV

6 of 9

On the fifth day, God filled the seas with fish and great whales, and the sky with birds.

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:21 KJV

7 of 9

On the sixth day, God made animals of every kind. Then he made people, a man and a woman, in his own image, to care for his world.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 1:27 KJV

8 of 9

God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good.

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Genesis 1:31 KJV

9 of 9

On the seventh day, God rested from all his work. He blessed that day and made it holy.

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Genesis 2:3 KJV

Frequently asked questions

Where is the creation story in the Bible?

The creation story is in Genesis 1 and 2, the first two chapters of the Bible. Genesis 1 describes the six days of creation, and Genesis 2 describes the seventh day and the creation of Adam and Eve in more detail.

What did God create on each day?

Day 1: light. Day 2: the sky. Day 3: dry land, seas and plants. Day 4: the sun, moon and stars. Day 5: fish and birds. Day 6: land animals and people. On day 7, God rested.

Why did God rest on the seventh day?

Not because he was tired. Genesis 2:3 says God blessed the seventh day and made it holy. Later, in Exodus 20:11, God gives his people a weekly day of rest following the same pattern.

How long did creation take?

Genesis describes six days of creation and a day of rest. Christians hold different views on whether these are 24-hour days or longer periods, but they agree that God created everything.
