Ruth and Naomi

Ruth stays loyal to Naomi, and God gives them a new family. A 2-minute animated story, told simply for children and families, with each verse from the King James Version.

1 of 8

Long ago, a woman named Naomi lived in the land of Moab. Her husband and both her sons died, and she was left with her two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah.

And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

Naomi decided to go home to Bethlehem. She told the young women to go back to their own families. Orpah kissed her goodbye and went home.

And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

But Ruth held on to Naomi. “Where you go, I will go,” she said. “Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.”

And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

So Naomi and Ruth traveled together to Bethlehem. They arrived just as the barley harvest was beginning.

So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

Ruth 1:22 KJV

Ruth went out to gather the leftover grain behind the harvesters. She happened to work in a field that belonged to a kind man named Boaz.

And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.

Ruth 2:3 KJV

6 of 8

Boaz heard how kind Ruth had been to Naomi. He told his workers to drop extra handfuls of grain on purpose, so Ruth could gather plenty.

And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.

Ruth 2:16 KJV

Later, Boaz and Ruth were married, and they had a baby boy named Obed. The neighbors said, “Naomi has a grandson!”

And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Ruth 4:17 KJV

Frequently asked questions

Where is the story of Ruth in the Bible?

The book of Ruth is in the Old Testament, right after Judges. It has only four chapters, so it is one of the shortest books in the Bible.

What did Ruth say to Naomi?

Ruth 1:16 records her famous promise: “whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.”

What does gleaning mean?

Gleaning means gathering the grain left behind after the harvesters. God’s law told farmers to leave some for the poor and for foreigners (Leviticus 19:9–10), which is how Ruth found food.

How is Ruth related to Jesus?
