What is John 1 about?

John 1 opens the Gospel of John by echoing Genesis: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This Word created all things, is the light that darkness cannot overcome, and "was made flesh, and dwelt among us" (verse 14), meaning God became human in Jesus. John the Baptist then appears, testifying that he is not the Christ but is preparing the way. When he sees Jesus, he says, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (verse 29). The chapter ends with the first disciples, including Andrew, Peter, Philip and Nathanael, beginning to follow Jesus.

What does John 1 mean?

John 1:1

John opens his Gospel with words that deliberately echo the first line of the Bible, "In the beginning." But instead of describing creation, he describes someone who already existed before it: "the Word." In Greek, Logos meant word, reason, or message, and Jewish readers knew that God created the world by speaking. John makes three claims. The Word existed in the beginning, so he was not created. The Word was "with God," distinct from the Father yet in closest fellowship with him. And "the Word was God," fully divine. Verse 14 reveals who the Word is: Jesus, who "was made flesh, and dwelt among us."

John 1:14

This verse is the heart of the Christmas message. The eternal Word, who was with God and was God (verse 1), "was made flesh." God did not merely visit the world or appear to be human; he became a real human being in Jesus. "Dwelt among us" literally means "pitched his tent" among us, recalling the tabernacle where God's presence lived among Israel in the wilderness. John says the disciples saw his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son. He was "full of grace and truth," showing God's undeserved kindness and his faithfulness perfectly. In Jesus, people could see what God is like.
