What does Lamentations 3:23 mean?
Continuing from the verse before, the writer says God's compassions "are new every morning." Just as each day brings a fresh sunrise, God's mercy is renewed daily. Yesterday's failures and sorrows do not use it up. Then comes the declaration that inspired the beloved hymn: "great is thy faithfulness." It is remarkable that these words were written among the ruins of Jerusalem, not in a time of comfort. The writer's circumstances had not changed, but his focus had. For anyone waking up to grief, regret, or exhaustion, this verse is a reminder that God meets each new day with fresh mercy.
