The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.

Luke 2:10 WEB

For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

“Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.”

Luke 2:14 WEB

When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

Luke 2:15 WEB

They came with haste and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.

Luke 2:16 WEB

When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.

Luke 2:19 WEB

Luke 2:25 WEB

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

Luke 2:26 WEB

He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law,

Luke 2:27 WEB

then he received him into his arms and blessed God, and said,

Luke 2:28 WEB

“Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace;

Luke 2:29 WEB

for my eyes have seen your salvation,

Luke 2:30 WEB

which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;

Luke 2:31 WEB

a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.”

Luke 2:32 WEB

Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him.

Luke 2:33 WEB

Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.

Luke 2:34 WEB

Luke 2:43 WEB

but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

Luke 2:44 WEB

When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.

What is Luke 2 about?

Luke 2 tells the Christmas story. A decree from Caesar Augustus takes Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, where Jesus is born and laid in a manger, "because there was no room for them in the inn" (verse 7). An angel announces to shepherds, "unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord," and a host of angels sings "Glory to God in the highest" (verse 14). The shepherds find the baby and spread the news. Later, Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus in the temple. The chapter ends with twelve-year-old Jesus found in the temple, listening to the teachers and asking questions.

What does Luke 2 mean?

Luke 2:11

An angel spoke these words to shepherds keeping watch over their flocks at night near Bethlehem. The announcement is full of meaning. "Unto you" makes it personal, and it came first to ordinary working men. "This day" means the long-awaited moment had arrived. "The city of David" is Bethlehem, David's hometown, fulfilling the promise that the Messiah would come from David's family. Then come three titles for the baby: a "Saviour," who rescues; "Christ," meaning the anointed King God promised; and "the Lord," a title Jews used for God himself. It is one of the most loved verses of the Christmas story.
