What is Psalm 1 about?

Psalm 1 opens the whole book of Psalms by setting out two ways to live. The "blessed" person refuses the advice of the ungodly and instead delights in God's law, thinking about it day and night. Such a person is like a tree planted by rivers of water, bearing fruit in its season, with leaves that do not wither (verse 3). The ungodly, by contrast, are like chaff that the wind blows away. The psalm ends with a simple contrast: "the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish." It invites every reader to choose God's way from the very first page.
