What is Psalm 22 about?
Psalm 22 begins with the cry Jesus spoke from the cross: "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" David describes being mocked, surrounded and in terrible suffering. Christians have long seen in it a striking picture of the crucifixion, centuries before it happened: "they pierced my hands and my feet" (verse 16) and "They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture" (verse 18), which the Gospels record. Yet the psalm does not end in despair. Halfway through it turns to praise, and it closes with all the ends of the earth turning to the LORD and future generations hearing what he has done.
