What is Psalm 35 about?

Psalm 35 is David's plea for God to defend him against people who were attacking and slandering him without cause. It opens, "Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me." David asks God to act as both warrior and judge. He describes how he had prayed and fasted for these same people when they were sick, yet they repaid him with evil. Psalms like this, which ask God to bring justice on enemies, leave vengeance in God's hands rather than taking it ourselves. The psalm ends with praise and with joy for those who support the righteous.
