What is Psalm 51 about?

Psalm 51 is David's prayer of repentance after the prophet Nathan confronted him over his sin with Bathsheba and the death of her husband Uriah (2 Samuel 11–12). David does not excuse himself. He asks God to blot out his transgressions according to his tender mercies, and admits, "Against thee, thee only, have I sinned." Its best-known prayer is verse 10: "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." David says that God does not want empty sacrifices but "a broken and a contrite heart." It has become the classic prayer for anyone seeking God's forgiveness.
