Romans 12

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

Romans 12:1 WEB

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 WEB

For I say through the grace that was given me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.

Romans 12:3 WEB

For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function,

Romans 12:4 WEB

so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another,

Romans 12:5 WEB

having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us: if prophecy, let’s prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;

Romans 12:6 WEB

or service, let’s give ourselves to service; or he who teaches, to his teaching;

Romans 12:7 WEB

or he who exhorts, to his exhorting; he who gives, let him do it with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Romans 12:17 WEB

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

What is Romans 12 about?

Romans 12 marks a turning point in Paul's letter, from what God has done to how Christians should live in response. It begins, "present your bodies a living sacrifice," and continues, "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind" (verses 1–2). Paul compares the church to one body with many members, each with different gifts, such as teaching, serving and giving. He then gives a series of short commands: love without hypocrisy, be devoted to one another, rejoice in hope, be patient in trouble, keep praying, bless persecutors, and never take revenge. The chapter ends, "overcome evil with good" (verse 21).

What does Romans 12 mean?

Romans 12:2

After eleven chapters explaining God's mercy, Paul turns to how Christians should live in response. "Be not conformed to this world" means do not let the values and habits of the surrounding culture squeeze you into their shape. Instead, "be ye transformed." The Greek word is the root of "metamorphosis," a change from the inside out, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. This change happens "by the renewing of your mind," as God's truth reshapes how we think. The result is that we can discern and live out God's will, which Paul describes as good, acceptable, and perfect.
