Bible Verses About Forgiveness

Forgiveness runs through the whole Bible in two directions. First, God forgives us. The psalmist marvels that he removes our sins as far as the east is from the west, Isaiah promises that sins like scarlet shall be white as snow, and John writes that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive. On the cross Jesus prayed even for those who crucified him: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Second, those who have been forgiven are called to forgive others. Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,” and told Peter to forgive not seven times but seventy times seven. These Bible verses about forgiveness are for anyone carrying guilt they cannot shake, or hurt they cannot let go. Forgiving does not mean pretending the wrong never happened. It means releasing it into the hands of a just and merciful God.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bible verse about forgiveness?

What does the Bible say about forgiving others?

Jesus links receiving God’s forgiveness with forgiving others (Matthew 6:14–15) and told Peter to forgive “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22). Ephesians 4:32 says to forgive “even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

What does seventy times seven mean?

When Peter asked if forgiving seven times was enough, Jesus answered “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22). He did not mean exactly 490 times, but that forgiveness should have no limit.

Does forgiving someone mean I have to trust them again?

Not necessarily. Forgiveness releases the debt and the desire for revenge (Romans 12:19), but rebuilding trust can take time and wisdom. Luke 17:3 also speaks of honest rebuke and repentance.
