Bible story · Judges 6–7

Gideon and the 300

God turns a fearful farmer into a leader and wins with just 300 men. A 2-minute animated story, told simply for children and families, with each verse from the King James Version.

1 of 8

Enemies called the Midianites kept raiding Israel. Gideon was secretly threshing wheat in a winepress, hiding so they wouldn’t steal it.

And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

Judges 6:11 KJV

2 of 8

The angel of the LORD appeared to him and said, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valour!”

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

Judges 6:12 KJV

3 of 8

Gideon was surprised. “My family is the weakest, and I am the least in my family.” But the LORD said, “I will be with you.”

And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

Judges 6:16 KJV

4 of 8

Gideon asked God for a sign. He put out a wool fleece overnight. In the morning, the fleece was wet with dew, but the ground all around was dry.

And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

Judges 6:38 KJV

5 of 8

Gideon gathered an army, but God said it was too big. At the water, God chose just three hundred men, so everyone would know the victory came from him.

And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

Judges 7:7 KJV

6 of 8

In the night, Gideon gave each man a trumpet and an empty jar with a torch hidden inside. They quietly surrounded the enemy camp.

And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

Judges 7:16 KJV

7 of 8

At Gideon’s signal they blew the trumpets, smashed the jars and held up the blazing torches, shouting, “The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon!”

And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

Judges 7:20 KJV

8 of 8

The enemy army woke up in confusion and ran away. God had given Israel the victory with just three hundred men.

And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

Judges 7:21 KJV

Frequently asked questions

What was Gideon’s fleece?

Gideon asked God for a sign using a wool fleece. First it was wet while the ground was dry (Judges 6:37–38), then the next night it was dry while the ground was wet (6:39–40).

How did God choose the 300 men?

God told Gideon to take the men to the water. The 300 who lapped water from their hands, rather than kneeling down to drink, were the ones God chose (Judges 7:5–7).

What is the lesson of Gideon?
