What is Isaiah 40 about?

Isaiah 40 begins the second half of the book of Isaiah with words of comfort for God's people, who would face exile in Babylon: "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people." A voice cries out to prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness, words the Gospels apply to John the Baptist. People are like grass that withers, "but the word of our God shall stand for ever" (verse 8). God is pictured as a shepherd who carries his lambs close to his heart, and as the Creator who measures the oceans in his hand. The chapter ends with the famous promise that those who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength (verse 31).

What does Isaiah 40 mean?

Isaiah 40:31

Isaiah wrote to God's people at a time when they felt forgotten and exhausted, facing exile and the long wait for rescue. The verse before this one admits that even strong young people grow tired and fall. In contrast, those who "wait upon the LORD" will find new strength. Waiting here is not passive; it means hoping in God, trusting him, and looking to him rather than to ourselves. The three pictures move from the dramatic to the ordinary: soaring like eagles, running, and then simply walking without fainting. Sometimes God's strength lifts us high, but often it carries us through the slow, everyday walk of faithfulness.
