What is Isaiah 41 about?

In Isaiah 41, God speaks to his people Israel, who felt small and afraid among powerful nations. He calls the nations to court and shows that he alone controls history, raising up a conqueror from the east, while their idols cannot predict anything or do anything at all. In contrast, he speaks tenderly to Israel: "thou art my servant; I have chosen thee." Then comes the beloved promise of verse 10: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee... I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee." Verse 13 adds, "I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee."

What does Isaiah 41 mean?

Isaiah 41:10

God speaks these words through the prophet Isaiah to the people of Israel, who faced the threat of powerful nations and the fear of exile. The command "fear thou not" rests on a simple reason: "I am with thee." God then adds "I am thy God," reminding them of their covenant relationship. Three promises follow: I will strengthen thee, I will help thee, I will uphold thee. The image of God's right hand suggests power and a firm grip that will not let go. Courage here does not come from inner toughness, but from knowing who stands beside us in our trouble.
